Why Worthington

Get Expert Support

Many Processes, One Invoice

Our extensive capabilities allow us to oversee all processes for you. We pickle, slit, cut to length, and blank under one roof, freeing you from managing multiple suppliers. The work is done and delivered through one invoice. With one contact.

Expert Support

From commodity standard requirements to customized solutions, all of our steel is backed by advanced metallurgical support from in-house experts, tailored buying strategies to mitigate risk, and streamlined supply chain solutions.

Superior Flatness Practices

In-line temper pass and roller leveling improve flatness—critical for efficient processing when lasering or stamping parts.  Available in master coil, slit, or cut to length sheets.

SIX PICKLE LINES

Our multiple, in-house pickle lines enable us to control surface quality, respond quickly to changing demand, and mitigate operational risk for reliable delivery.

Vision Systems

Our vision systems ensure consistent quality through enhanced inspection of entire steel coils. Advanced technology spots and documents any problematic imperfections that could negatively impact performance.

Electrostatic Oilers

By utilizing electrostatic oilers, our facilities can apply a precise amount of oil, significantly reducing waste and keeping your floors cleaner. We can also apply different oils depending on your stamping and lasering needs.

Types of Hot Roll Steel

It Starts With the Steel You Choose—And the Company You Trust

  • Hot Roll Black
Hot rolled steel, in its most basic form, with mill scale, is purchased with no cosmetic expectations and minimal shape expectations. Customers often remove mill scale by shot blasting or batch pickling after fabrication.
  • Hot Roll Pickled & Oiled (HRPO)
Hot roll steel is passed through a diluted acid bath to produce a surface free of oxide scale, rust, inorganic contaminants, and stains. Pickling improves surface condition, extends die life, and helps coatings stick. Required for further processing, such as cold rolling or hot-dip galvanizing.
  • Hot Roll Pickled + Tempered
After pickling, hot roll steel can be temper-rolled to improve flatness, shape, and yield, particularly for low-carbon steel applications. This eliminates the tendency for steel to non-uniformly stretch (flute), creates an improved surface texture, and helps relieve internal stress for laser cutting.
  • Hot Roll Pickled + Annealed
Done primarily on mid- to high-carbon grades to soften metals for easier stamping before parts are heat-treated.  Our facilities use 100% hydrogen annealing, which prevents age hardening due to hydrogen pick-up that is common with nitrogen-based annealing.

Delivery Methods and Grades

A Closer Look at Steel Grades & Common Formats

  • Steel Grades
Steel grades vary by strength, formability, and composition. From carbon to high-strength and ultra-high strength options, each grade is tailored to meet performance, processing, and application needs across a range of industries.
  • De-Coiled / Cut-To-Length Sheet

Steel cut to laser bed requirements or custom sizes.  Combine with an in-house temper pass to ensure the necessary flatness for lasering.

  • Configured Blanks

Pre-cut, flat, geometric shapes are delivered ready for forming. Focus your operations, save manufacturing steps, eliminate die and press maintenance, maximize material use, and add flexibility with multiple ship-tos from a central location.

  • Slit
Standard steel coils are cut to narrower widths or split into smaller PIW steel coils.  In addition, we can meet exacting width tolerance and dimensional specs for manufacturing, packaged to your requirements. This is ideal for high-volume part manufacturing.

CONVERTING TO HOT ROLL

Could you be using hot roll instead of cold roll sheet? We can help you find it out.

With our advanced processing capabilities and expert sourcing, we have helped several customers convert from a cold roll product to hot roll where design and structural requirements allow. If you’re interested in exploring what’s possible, our experienced metallurgists can work with you to assess your material and operational needs, test, analyze, and find a hot roll solution that meets your exact requirements.
