Driving Value Through Strategic Partnerships

The Problem at Hand

While steel processing is at the core of what we do at Worthington Steel, the value and dedication we bring to customer relationships extends beyond the coil.

One of our customers was facing high capital costs and limited floor space tied up in slow-turn inventory. Their growth was constrained by a lack of space for higher-demand products, resulting in excess working capital. That’s when our team stepped in with long-term solutions designed to unlock efficiency and drive results.

A Team Effort

The team – consisting of Worthington Steel employees in sales, scheduling and supply chain – began with a comprehensive assessment of the customer’s operations. In doing this, they identified two areas of focus.

They started by creating an ordering system for the customer that gives us a signal when inventory reaches a specified level. The notification allows us to automatically reorder the steel needed at the right time to prevent inventory shortages. In addition, we also put safety stock guidelines in place for the steel they require, ensuring its availability as the customer’s demand varied.

Brandon Miller, Senior Transformation Manager

This is how we deliver on our vision to be the most trusted, innovative and value-added metals processing partner. Together with our customer, we used a lean event to optimize their value stream and achieve meaningful results in just one month."

Finding the Right Solution

The new ordering system deepened our relationship with the customer, with improved visibility into inventory levels and strengthened demand planning. In one month, the customer reduced their working capital by 61% and had adequate steel inventory for high-demand products.

Improved Operations

The reduction in working capital led to improved cash flow and greater operational flexibility. This reflects Worthington Steel’s commitment to solving problems beyond the material itself. Whether it’s reducing waste, improving efficiency or enabling leaner operations, we’re here to provide solutions tailored to meet end goals.

Frank Roberto, sr. director of supply chain

Supply chain isn’t only about moving material. It’s about creating visibility, reducing waste and enabling smarter decisions. By designing replenishment systems with built-in signals and safety stock, we help customers free up capital and floor space so they can focus on growing their businesses. That’s the kind of long-term value we aim to deliver in every partnership."
