COATED STEEL
Coated products* include:
• zinc coated (Galvanized),
• zinc-iron coated (Galvannealed),
• aluminum coated (Aluminized)
• lead coated (Terne)
The purpose of the coatings is typically to serve as a corrosion inhibitor. Galvanizing and aluminizing consists of uncoiling and passing the continuous length of successive coils through a molten bath of the metal (termed hot dipped galvanizing) or by continuously zinc coating the uncoiled sheet electrolytically (termed electro-galvanizing).
Galvannealed products are created by passing galvanized sheets directly through a heated chamber after they leave the exit rolls of the hot dip coating pot. This process prolongs the freezing period of the molten zinc and allows the zinc coating to completely alloy with the base metal.
The starting substrate for hot dipped products may be either hot roll or cold roll, while electro-galvanized products tend to be cold roll substrates.
*Carbon levels typically do not exceed 0.25% for coated products.
